Protecting your child’s skin from the sun is a top priority, but if you’ve ever struggled with the sunscreen battle, you know it’s not always easy. Some kids hate the sticky texture, others can’t sit still long enough to apply it, and many parents are looking for natural alternatives to chemical sunscreens.

That’s where DIY Natural Sun Balm comes in! 🌿☀️ This homemade balm uses oils and butters with natural SPF properties, keeping your child’s skin moisturized and protected—all without the harsh ingredients found in some store-bought sunscreens.

But is it safe for kids? The short answer: Yes! Plus, it's safe for healed tattoos too! With a few modifications and extra sun-smart habits, this sun balm can be a great addition to your family’s sun protection routine.

DIY Natural Sun Balm

DIY Sun Balm Recipe (With Natural SPF!)

This gentle, nourishing sun balm is made with natural ingredients that offer mild sun protection while keeping the skin soft and hydrated. This recipe makes about 1 cup (8 oz or 240 ml).

Ingredients:

Instructions:

1️⃣ In a double boiler (or a heatproof bowl over simmering water), melt the coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax, stirring occasionally.

2️⃣ Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

3️⃣ Stir in red raspberry seed oil, carrot seed oil, and vitamin E oil.

4️⃣ Add lavender essential oil (if using) and mix well.

5️⃣ Pour into a small tin or glass jar and let it set at room temperature or in the fridge.

How to Use:

✅ Apply a small amount to exposed skin before sun exposure.

Reapply every 1-2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating.

✅ Store in a cool, dry place to prevent melting.

Estimated Uses by Area:

Face + Neck Only (approx. 2.5–5 ml per use):

  • 48–96 uses per batch

Face, Arms, and Shoulders (Kids) (approx. 10–15 ml per use):

  • 16–24 uses per batch

Full Body (Adult) (approx. 30 ml per use):

  • 8 full-body uses

Storage Tips to Maximize Shelf Life:

  • Keep in a cool, dark place (heat and light can cause oils to spoil)

  • Use a clean applicator or hands each time to prevent bacteria

  • Store in a tinted glass jar to protect from UV light

Estimated Shelf Life:

  • 6–9 months if stored at room temp and used often

  • Up to 12 months if stored in a cool, dark cabinet or refrigerator

💡 Pro Tip: If you notice any change in smell, color, or texture (like separation or rancid scent), it’s time to toss it and make a fresh batch.

DIY Natural Sun Balm

Is DIY Sun Balm Safe for Kids?

Yes, but there are a few things to keep in mind! While the ingredients in this sun balm are generally safe for kids, natural SPF oils don’t provide the same broad-spectrum protection as commercial sunscreens. That’s why it’s best to pair this balm with other sun-smart habits:

  • UV-Protective Clothing – Rash guards, wide-brimmed hats, and lightweight long sleeves offer excellent sun coverage without the need for extra sunscreen.

  • Stay in the Shade – A pop-up beach tent or umbrella is a great way to reduce sun exposure while still enjoying the outdoors.

  • Plan Around Peak Sun Hours – The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM—try to schedule outdoor time earlier or later in the day.

Kid-Friendly Modifications

For younger kids and babies, you can make a few adjustments to this recipe for extra gentleness:

  • For babies & toddlers:

    • Increase the shea butter to 3 tbsp for a softer, gentler formula.

    • Skip essential oils—while lavender is generally safe, babies under 2 have extra-sensitive skin.

    • Apply only on small areas (face, arms, legs) and avoid the eyes & mouth area.

  • For active kids:

    • Add a little extra beeswax (increase to 3 tbsp) to make the balm more water-resistant for pool and beach days.

    • Use alongside zinc-based sunscreen for longer sun exposure.

💡 Pro Tip: Always do a patch test before using any new product on your child’s skin! Apply a small amount to the inside of the wrist and wait 24 hours to check for reactions.

Is This Sun Balm Safe for Tattoos?

Yes! This DIY Sun Balm is moisturizing and gentle, making it a great option for healed tattoos. The natural SPF oils (red raspberry seed and carrot seed oil) help protect against sun damage, while shea butter and vitamin E oil keep tattooed skin hydrated and vibrant.

However, it’s important to note that natural SPF oils don’t offer full broad-spectrum protection like mineral sunscreens. If you’re spending extended time in the sun, consider adding non-nano zinc oxide to the balm or layering it with a zinc-based sunscreen for extra UV defense.

  • For fresh tattoos: Avoid direct sun exposure until fully healed.

  • For healed tattoos: This balm helps maintain hydration and provides light SPF protection, but covering up or using a stronger sunscreen is best for long-term tattoo care.

Should You Use a Zinc-Based Sunscreen Too?

If your child is spending extended time in direct sun, you might want to layer this sun balm with a natural mineral sunscreen (zinc-based).

Why? Zinc oxide is the only natural ingredient that offers full broad-spectrum protection (blocking both UVA & UVB rays). If you’d like to boost your DIY sun balm, you can add non-nano zinc oxide powder to the mix!

How to Add Zinc Oxide:

  • Stir in 1 tbsp of non-nano zinc oxide when mixing your oils (wear a mask while handling the powder to avoid inhaling).

  • This increases SPF but still needs to be reapplied regularly.
